No need for president to have religion

Tony Norman, Writing in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, has one of the more rational takes on the "Obama is a Muslim" brouhaha.

"Two centuries of American democracy has come to this -- a de facto religious test for the highest office in the land. That's why many people, believers and nonbelievers alike, pray for a sincere skeptic in the White House. An agnostic or an atheist would have the latitude and political freedom to tell our nation's ayatollahs to go to hell."

As Norman points out, no President since Thomas Jefferson has been honest on the subject.

That is overdue.

Interesting stats coming from a recent survey. While some 83% of Americans identify with some belief (religion) or another, roughly half of those have little knowledge of that which they profess to be... and behave in a manner antithetic to the faith.

So does that mean that half of the faithful are really RINOS (religious in name only)?

What demonstrates an understanding of any religion?

Memorization of passages?

A capacity for coherent explanation of what one believes - including the stuff that is kept on the down low, because it is embarrassing/contradictory/not the message they are trying to stress?

Something else?

Is a belief in a Rapture a belief about a positive destruction of the world and all of the people not members of their faith?
